Note: The award is usually known as the Zanzibar War Medal (1896) or Sultan of Zanzibar’s Medal. It was instituted by Sultan Hamoud bin Mohammed following the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896. The medal was awarded to British naval and military personnel, as well as Zanzibari forces, who took part in that conflict-the shortest war in recorded history. This medal by Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini of Zanzibar and was awarded to Zanzibari, Indian and African troops serving in some East African campaigns. It was mostly issued unnamed.<o:p></o:p>
