Note: The Persian term “Noor Afshan” literally means “light scattering.” These coins were used during imperial processions to ceremonially scatter wealth. Upon his accession, Emperor Jahangir formalized this practice as part of the Mughal ritual of nisar, a ceremonial distribution of coins symbolizing imperial largesse, royal benevolence, and legitimacy, while also serving as a safeguard against the evil eye.Nisar coins functioned to divert the public’s attention, thereby protecting the emperor from ill effects attributed to the evil eye during court appearances or processions. Jahangir frequently mentions in his autobiography the sums he scattered while traveling or holding processions in cities such as Ahmedabad. However, numismatic evidence indicates that these distributions were often executed by high-ranking officials, as many nisar coins have been found from regions where the emperor himself never traveled.These coins were typically struck in low denominations, ensuring that a limited sum could be distributed over a longer ritual or procession. Due to their small value and intended dispersal, surviving specimens are exceptionally rare, making them highly prized for collectors of Mughal coinage.
