Renowned as a flourishing centre of commerce, Khambat (Cambay) was Gujarat’s foremost port from the 14th century onward. Its importance was recorded by celebrated travellers such as Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta. Marco Polo notably observed that, despite widespread piracy across the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Khambhat remained comparatively safe for merchants, enhancing the port’s commercial reputation. As the principal maritime outlet for Patan, Khambhat also held considerable strategic importance. During the Mughal expansion into Gujarat, Akbar dispatched his general Itimad Khan to besiege and capture the town, after which Mirza Aziz Koka (Kokaltash) was appointed the province’s first Mughal Viceroy. The princely state of Khambhat was later established by Mirza Jafar Mumin Khan, who assumed the title of Nawab in 1730.Shah Alam Bahadur I, the third son of Aurangzeb Alamgir, succeeded to the Mughal throne after defeating his brother Prince Azam Shah at the decisive Battle of Jajau on 8 June 1707. Interestingly, the mint name “Murtazabad” is otherwise known from Maratha coinage of the Maharashtra region, where it was the name given to Miraj. The occurrence of the same mint name in 18th–19th century Uttar Pradesh is a noteworthy addition to numismatic knowledge.This specimen was found together with coins attributed to Murtazabad and appears to have formed part of a currency bag from Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Based on its find context, it is most plausibly a Rohilla issue, possibly struck under Hafiz Rahmat Khan.

Note:&nbsp;After the Mongol conflict at Kara in AD 1292, political authority within the Delhi Sultanate began to shift from Sultan Firuz Khilji to his ambitious nephew, Ala ud din Khilji. Ala Ud Din sought Firuz’s permission to raid Chanderi but instead struck deep into the Deccan, plundering Devagiri, the wealthy capital of the Yadavas. Laden with immense spoils, he returned north in AD 1296, apologizing for the unauthorized venture and promising Firuz a large share of the booty. To secure his pardon, Ala ud din lured the Sultan to Kara-where he murdered him and proclaimed himself Sultan Ala ud Din Muhammad.<o:p></o:p>In the aftermath, Firuz’s widow proclaimed her younger son&nbsp;Qadr Khan&nbsp;as Sultan&nbsp;Rukn al-Din Ibrahim, even though the elder son, Arkali Khan, was based at Multan. Under the Treaty of Seringapatam, signed on 26 February 1792, Tipu Sultan was compelled to surrender his two young sons, Princes Abdul Khaliq, aged 10, and Muhi ud din, aged 8, as hostages to guarantee his compliance with the terms of the treaty. Note: This variety, featuring the regnal year "Ahad" in Persian script above the word "Shuja," is unlisted in the KM catalog.<o:p></o:p>Shah Shuja, the second son of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, briefly laid claim to the Mughal throne during the 1650s, amid a fierce power struggle with his brothers. Serving as Governor of Bengal, Shuja declared himself Emperor, issued his own coinage, and had the Khutba recited in his name in cities like Patna and Akbarnagar. His reign (AH 1068–1070 / 1658–1660 CE) was short-lived, overshadowed by his rivalry with Aurangzeb, who ultimately defeated him. Forced into exile in Arakan (modern-day Myanmar), Shuja eventually met his end there. The coins from this turbulent period reflect the competing claims to the throne by Shuja, Murad Bakhsh, and Aurangzeb, offering valuable insight into the contested Mughal succession.&nbsp;

Note:&nbsp;The Third Anglo–Mysore War (1790–1792), the third of the four Anglo–Mysore Wars, was fought in South India between the Kingdom of Mysore, under Tipu Sultan, and the British East India Company, supported by its allies, including the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The war concluded in March 1792 with the Treaty of Seringapatanam, under which Mysore was compelled to surrender a substantial portion of its territories.<o:p></o:p>The Mysore Medal was authorised in April 1793 by Lord Cornwallis, Governor-General of India, who had commanded the East India Company forces during the campaign. These medals were primarily awarded to native Indian troops serving in the Company’s forces. Gold medals were reserved for senior native officers, including Subedars; larger silver medals were awarded to junior officers such as Jemadars and Serangs, while smaller silver medals were presented to non-commissioned ranks and sepoys, including Havildars, Naiks, Tindals and Lascars.
