Note: An exceedingly rare and historically type, this Portuguese colonial issue offers a fascinating insight into the early European presence in Africa and the far-reaching maritime networks of the 18th century. Struck for a brief and limited period (1735, 1737, and 1743) at the Portuguese Indian colony of Goa, these coins were intended for circulation in Mozambique, reflecting the deep commercial and administrative links between Portuguese India and East Africa.<o:p></o:p>This remarkable issue stands as a tangible witness to the interconnected colonial economy, where coinage produced in India was exported for use in African territories - possibly indicating strong and flourishing trade activity centered around the Indian Ocean network.<o:p></o:p>The present specimen is well struck and only lightly circulated, displaying an attractive, even gunmetal-grey patina with sharp and well-preserved details.
