Note: An exceptional and possibly unique coin of the Tanjavur Marathas, this is the first and only known example of the type struck in lead, whereas the series is otherwise known only in copper.<o:p></o:p>This specimen is also the plate coin illustrated in Sitaraman’s reference work, further enhancing its importance and pedigree. It is remarkably large for the type, with full and clear Tamil legends sharply struck across the surfaces. The coin exhibits remarkably well-preserved surfaces, showing outstanding detail and definition rarely encountered in this series.<o:p></o:p>It is possibly a commemorative issue associated with the famed Brihadeeswara Temple of Thanjavur, dating back to the illustrious Chola period, adding a layer of cultural and historical significance to the piece.<o:p></o:p>Offered here for the first time in any auction, and the only example known, this represents an important and significant rarity for collectors of Maratha coinage.<o:p></o:p>&nbsp;
