Note: Daulatabad is an extremely rare mint for Nisar issues of Shah Jahan. When this Nisar was struck, Daulatabad served as the headquarters for the Mughal campaign against Shahaji Bhosle, who had revived the Nizamshahi Sultanate by enthroning a young boy at Pemgiri (Shahgarh) in western Maharashtra.<o:p></o:p>Nisar coins functioned as talismans to ward off the ill effects of the “evil eye,” distracting onlookers while the emperor appeared at court or during processions. Jahangir himself records in his autobiography the sums of money he distributed during processions in cities such as Ahmadabad. Many Nisārs, however, originate from mints in cities the emperor never visited, indicating that these rituals were frequently carried out by high-ranking officials or members of the court.<o:p></o:p>These coins were generally struck in very low denominations, intended to last only for the duration of the ritual or procession. As a result, such low-denomination Nisārs are extremely rare today, since survival through circulation was limited.<o:p></o:p>
