This practice is most evident in the light-weight Malwa tankas (c. 6.8-7.0 g) struck at Ujjain and probably Mandu, in the square <span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-GB;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-highlight:yellow;">sasnu<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-GB;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-highlight:yellow;"> issues of Kashmir produced in Akbar’s name, and, to a lesser extent, in Gujarat. Akbar occupied Gujarat during AH 980-991. Although standard Mughal rupees and mohurs were struck at Ahmadabad during this period, numismatic evidence indicates that locally influenced silver issues were also produced at at least one other mint. A distinctive Gujarat-type coin in Akbar’s name was published by Jan Lingen (“Gujarat type coin in the name of Akbar,” Numismatic Digest, Vol. IV, Part 2, December 1980). This type closely resembles certain issues of the Gujarat Sultan Mahmud I from Mustafabad (cf. G&amp;G G645), a town near the Girnar fortress, now known as Junagadh. The specimen illustrated by Lingen, weighing 5.75 g, differs from both standard Mughal and Sultanate issues. One side bears the Kalima, while the other displays “Jalal al-Din Muhammad Akbar Badshah” within a peaked square, a design element characteristic of Gujarat Sultanate coinage. A marginal legend, possibly naming the mint, surrounds the central device, and traces of what may be the date AH 981 appear within the peaked square. The use of the peaked square motif, so typical of Gujarat Sultanate issues, strongly supports attribution to a local Gujarati mint. The present coin is therefore best regarded as a rare transitional provincial issue, reflecting the survival of regional numismatic traditions under early Mughal rule.<o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>
