The concept of Canteen Tokens developed in industrial, commercial, military, catering and other such units during the time of the World War II. Such tokens were mainly used in the cotton mills of western India. Hotels, tea stalls, etc. in different parts of India still use canteen tokens. These are made of various metals like brass, copper, aluminum, etc. The Guide has catalogued canteen tokens of major establishments like mills, military, banks, etc. who issued them. 295 tokens have been catalogued with details like the issuer, location, metal, weight, size shape, value and descriptions of obverse and reverse.

Analysing in depth an astonishing mass of numismatic and kindred data, published in different catalogues, archaeological reports, journals and elsewhere, this book investigates the evolution of ancient Indias money economy: in terms of its coinage, through six successive periods: janapada, Maurya, post-Maurya, Gupta, post-Gupta, and pre-medieval which, in their togetherness, span nearly two millennia. Covering the entire subcontinental sprawl, Dr. Jain considers the whole variety of coins: local, universal standard, and even foreign, with meticulous descriptions of coin types, symbols, legends, fabric and metrology.
