Note: Soviet casualties in the Second World War number by popular belief to be about 20 million men, both military and civilian included. Estimates widely vary, and it is believed a further 7 million women died in the war effort. Leaving conflicting estimates aside, it is generally accepted that the casualties were exceptionally high amounting to nearly 15-20 percent of the population of the country. Such a massive decrease, and the gender imbalance has deprived today’s Russia of the ‘breeding stock’ required to grow its population to sustainable levels. The Soviet government undertook various measures to enhance its population by promoting child birth. One of these measures was to honour new mothers with medals commemorating Maternal Glory. These were issued in three classes, presumably the highest class given to those with multiple children. Presented here are two Maternal Glory Medals, Class I and Class II. They were minted in silver and the mint mark and number given on the reverse.
