Note: The Sambuvaraya chieftains ruled the historic region of Tondaimandalam in South India. One of their notable rulers, Edirili Chola Sambhuvaraya, initially served as a feudatory under Rajadhiraja Chola II and Kulotunga Chola III, administering the northern parts of Tondaimandalam: covering areas of present-day Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, Nellore, and Chittoor.

By the 14th century, with the decline of the Telugu Cholas, Hoysalas, and Pandyas, the Sambuvarayas asserted their independence and emerged as autonomous rulers over their territories.
